Full or Simple PDF report: a client version, choosing pages and columns

The "PDF report" window in every module: Full with everything, Simple for the client, and Custom, where you choose the pages, floors and columns step by step.

Founder of HeatAlgo, author of the calculation engine to EN 12831 and EN 1264

One project sometimes needs two reports: a full one for the crew on the job site and a shorter one for the client. That is why the report download in every module opens a "PDF report" window. You pick a version there, see what the report will hold and only then download the file. Where the download buttons are and what is on the cover is in PDF reports and the printable floor plan.

Where the "PDF report" window opens

  • Heat loss calculation - the "Result" step, the "Download PDF" button.
  • Heat pump sizing - the "Result" step, the "Download PDF report" button. The window opens when the form has no errors.
  • Radiant floor heating ("Underfloor heating" in the app) - the toolbar's "Download" button, then "PDF report" in "Project documents".
  • Heat recovery ventilation - the "Result" step, the download button, then "PDF report".

In the window, "Download PDF" downloads the report in the version you picked.

Full, Simple and Custom

The window is three cards under "Report version":

  • "Full", marked "Recommended" - every page and every column. In radiant floor heating the window describes it as "Everything: loops with the installation data, rotameter settings, rooms without a loop, the plans and the method."
  • "Simple" - for the client. In radiant floor heating: "For the client: loop output against each room's need and the plans, without installation data."
  • "Custom" - you choose the pages, floors and columns yourself, step by step (below).

With "Full" or "Simple", "Download PDF" downloads the report straight away. With "Custom" the button reads "Next" instead. Full is selected every time you open the window - the report as it was before the window existed. The window does not remember your last choice and does not save it in the project.

The pages in each version

The page names are the app's own.

ModuleSimpleFull adds
Radiant floor heating"Heating loops", "Storey plans", "Notes""Rooms without a loop", "Rotameter settings", "Calculation method", "Sources and disclaimer"
Heat loss calculation"Notes""Room sheets", "Calculation method", "Assumptions and notes", "Sources and disclaimer"
Heat pump sizing"Pump options", "Energy and cost", "Notes""Rooms", "Heat losses", "Radiator plan", "Pump and sizing", "Sources and disclaimer"
Heat recovery ventilation"Drawings", "Notes""Installation requirements", "Ducts", "Unit", "Pressure", "Operating modes", "Regulation", "Parts list", "Calculation method", "Sources and disclaimer"

"Rotameter settings" are the flow meter settings for each loop. Every version has the cover, the result page ("Power balance" in radiant floor heating, "Building overview" in the heat loss calculation, "Pump sizing" for the pump). The closing page "Sources and disclaimer" - the standards the report rests on, the installer and the disclaimer - is in Full; leave it out and the disclaimer prints at the foot of the result page. The heat loss calculation always prints its "Room table" too, with each room's heat loss. Heat pump sizing always prints its "Limitations" page, and heat recovery ventilation its "Air balance" and "Design findings": a report never hides why a design stops. In the list of pages these pages are checked for good and cannot be unchecked. "Notes" is the text from the "Report notes" field under the results.

The columns Simple hides

Simple keeps the columns the client reads and hides the crew's and the designer's. On the pages Simple prints, it hides:

ModuleTableHidden columns
Radiant floor heating"Heating loops""Spacing", "Pipe length", "Loop pattern", "Floor temperature θF,m", "Flow"
Heat loss calculation"Room table""Volume", "Transmission loss", "Ventilation loss", "Thermal bridges"
Heat pump sizing"Energy and cost""Cost per kWh of heat"
Heat recovery ventilation"Air balance""Volume", "Occupants", "Recommendation (air changes)", "Regulation clause"

The standard's result never leaves any version: each room's heat loss in the heat loss calculation, the loop output and the room balance in radiant floor heating, the adopted and balanced air flows in heat recovery ventilation. You choose single columns in the last step of "Custom"; the columns with the standard's result are not there to hide. When the load taken from the heat loss calculation includes heating-up power, and the report leaves out the "Heat losses" page or its heating-up column, the "Pump sizing" page states that power in its calculation basis, because EN 12831-1 requires heating-up power used in sizing to be stated.

Custom: pages, floors and columns

"Custom" takes two steps. Above them the window says which one you are on, for example "Step 2 of 3 · Pages", and "Back" returns to the one before.

  1. "Pages" - every page of the report in print order, each with a checkbox and one line on what it holds. Everything starts checked, as in Full. The cover and the result page are checked for good. A page the project has nothing for is not on the list: "Notes" appears only once the "Report notes" field is not empty. In radiant floor heating, when the project has more than one floor, "Storeys" sits above the list: a floor you uncheck leaves the report with its rooms, loops, plan and manifolds, and at least one has to stay.
  2. "Columns" - a checkbox for each column you can hide, in the tables of the pages you kept. When none of those pages has a table, this step is not there and "Download PDF" is already on "Pages".

The list describes the pages, it does not show them - the download is always the real PDF report of your project.

Download everything (ZIP) in radiant floor heating

"Download everything (ZIP)" in "Project documents" opens one window that walks its steps in order:

  1. "Documents" - "PDF report", "Print plan" and "Bill of materials". The print plan needs an unlocked project, a calibrated background and drawn sections; on a phone it goes into the ZIP only when a paper size is already picked. "Next" moves to the next step.
  2. "Report" (only with "PDF report" checked) - the same "Full", "Simple" and "Custom" cards; with "Custom" its "Pages" and "Columns" steps follow this one.
  3. "Print plan" (only with the print plan checked, on a computer) - the scale, the paper size and the orientation, the same fields as the "Download floor plan" window.

"Download ZIP" on the last step packs the documents you picked. The ZIP downloads by itself, so you can close the window.

Purchases and the watermark

Picking a version unlocks nothing - it only removes pages and columns from the report. A project without a purchase does not show the window: the download button downloads the full report with a watermark straight away, as before. What a purchase unlocks is in the free plan and what a report unlocks.

A HeatAlgo report follows EN 12831-1 and EN 1264, not ACCA Manual J, and is not accepted for permits or rebates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Full and a Simple report?

Full has every page and every column - the report as it printed before the window existed, and the one selected until you change anything. Simple is for the client: the result and the pages the client reads, without the crew's and the designer's pages and columns. In radiant floor heating, Simple has the heating loops, the floor plans and the notes, and the loop table keeps only the area beside the output.

What is always in the report?

The cover and the result, whichever version you pick. The closing page "Sources and disclaimer" is in Full and can be left out; without it the disclaimer prints at the foot of the result page, so no report goes out without it. The heat loss calculation always prints its "Room table" too, heat pump sizing its "Limitations" page, and heat recovery ventilation the air balance and the design findings. The columns with the standard's result always stay as well: each room's heat loss in the heat loss calculation, the loop output and the room balance in radiant floor heating, the adopted and balanced flows in heat recovery ventilation. The calculation method is in the Full report; Simple leaves it out.

Does the window show the pages of my project?

No. With "Custom" the window shows the list of pages: every page in order, each with a checkbox and one line on what it holds. The download is always the real PDF report of your project.

Does picking a version unlock the full report?

No. A choice only removes pages and columns. A project without a purchase downloads watermarked pages, as before.

Do I have to pick the version at every download?

Only if you want something other than Full. The window remembers nothing: it opens on Full every time, so Simple or your own choice of pages has to be picked again at each download.
