Getting around the HeatAlgo app: Start, the side menu, the top bar and shortcuts

Getting around the HeatAlgo app: Start, the side menu, the top bar, settings and billing, the Ctrl+K dialog, the wizards, units and what works on a phone.

Founder of HeatAlgo, author of the calculation engine to EN 12831 and EN 1264

The HeatAlgo app has three fixed parts: the Start page, the side menu on the left and the top bar. Everything else - projects, modules, Algo, settings, billing - opens from them. This article shows what is where, so you do not have to search.

The Start page

Start opens after you sign in, and from the "Start" item in the side menu. On it you find:

  • a greeting with the number of active projects and the "New project" button,
  • the field "Tell Algo what to do in your project..." - a question for Algo, with ready suggestions ("Find what is missing in a project", "Create a new project", "What can you do in heatalgo?"),
  • the "Setup" card on a new account, with its steps in this order: "Who you are", "First project", "First report", "Use Algo AI", "Secure your account" (two-step verification) and the optional "Complete your profile" - each with a link to the right place; finish all five required steps for a discount on a report or a subscription (details in what is free and what a report unlocks),
  • "Recently edited" and "Other projects" with the "Continue" (opens the module you last worked in), "Open" and "Start" buttons,
  • the "Your brand" card with your logo and company name, and "What's new" - announcements about changes in the app,
  • the "Guides" section with links to the help center.

On a brand-new account, Start shows the four modules with a short description. You can start with any of them, and the app remembers your progress.

The side menu

The side menu (behind the menu button on a narrow screen) has these items: "Start", "Algo AI", "My library" (the constructions, windows, doors, units, fittings and radiators saved on your account, ready to pick in every project), the "Projects" section with a plus for creating a project and the project list, and "Settings". Every project on the list expands to "Project overview" and the four modules: "Heat loss calculation", "Heat pump selection" (heat pump sizing), "Underfloor heating" (radiant floor heating) and "Heat recovery ventilation" (with a beta badge). The "All projects" item leads to the full list. You collapse the menu with "Hide menu" and expand it with "Show menu".

At the bottom of the menu is the account card with your plan ("Free account", the number of credits, or "Subscription active") and the "Full access" box with the "Unlock" button, which you can hide for 30 days.

The top bar

The top bar holds the breadcrumb (project, module, step), the "Back" button, the "?" icon with help for the current screen (only where such help exists), the "Algo AI" button, the notification bell and the account menu.

The account menu (top-right corner) has "Settings", "Plan and billing", "Help center", "What's new" (the changelog), "Send feedback", "Email us", "Language", a "Learn more" submenu with "Terms of service" and "Privacy policy", and "Sign out". Module help is not a menu item - it is the "?" icon in the top bar.

A module's buttons are on the wizard's bottom bar. The gear on the glass island opens "Module settings" (in the heat loss calculation from step 2, and in heat pump sizing): "Data sources" with "Algo AI", "Units" and "Module data" with "Clear". On the Result step there are the square report notes and PDF download buttons. In radiant floor heating the export actions are on the toolbar.

Units: feet or meters

HeatAlgo shows numbers in metric (m, °C, W) or imperial (ft, °F, Btu/h). An account created from the US starts in imperial. You switch in Settings ("Units"), in a wizard's "Module settings", or in the radiant floor heating toolbar menu. The choice belongs to your account, so it applies in every project. Only what you see and type changes - every calculation stays metric, to EN standards. More in settings, logo and notifications.

The project dialog: Ctrl+K

Ctrl+K (Cmd+K on a Mac) opens the "Projects" dialog from anywhere: a list of recent projects, a "Search projects" field, and next to each one whether the project is unlocked. The arrow keys select, Enter opens, Esc closes. A name with no match offers "Create project "name"". Details are in the article on projects.

The module wizards

The heat loss calculation, heat pump sizing and ventilation are wizards. Below the form is a bar with a square "Back" button, a glass island and a "Next" button. On the island, the step number (for example "4/7") opens the list of steps, where you can go to any step. The icon with the issue count ("N to fix") collects the fields you still need to complete, with "Fix" buttons. The "Blocks the calculation" label says what stops the result. The step number is in the page address, so you can save a link to a specific step. Radiant floor heating has no wizard. It is one canvas with a toolbar, a side panel and the "This floor" guide, which shows what is done and what blocks the next step.

All modules save automatically - there is no save button. What you see when saving has a problem is in the article on troubleshooting.

Notifications

The bell in the top bar opens the "Notifications" inbox with categories (message, news, system, activity) and the "Mark all as read" and "Clear all" buttons. Some announcements show as a pop-up with a "Next" button. You choose which messages also come by email in Settings.

Feedback, help and contact

"Send feedback" in the account menu has three forms: "Report a problem" (a screenshot is attached automatically), "Suggest a module" (which tool is missing) and "Email us" (questions and account matters; we reply by email, usually within 24 hours). "Help center" leads to the guides on heatalgo.com, and "What's new" to the changelog.

Phone, tablet, computer

Projects, the project view, the heat loss calculation, heat pump sizing, the client form, Algo, settings and billing work on a phone. Drawing in radiant floor heating and the "Ducts" step in ventilation need a larger screen - a computer or a tablet. On a phone, radiant floor heating shows the project's documents to download (the report and the materials list), and the "Ducts" step shows a note, both with a contact button. The other steps of the ventilation wizard work on a phone.

On a phone, the rooms step in the heat loss calculation, heat pump sizing and ventilation has one sticky row with the current room and its position (for example "2 of 7"), and the room list slides up from the bottom of the screen. On short screens - a phone turned sideways, a small laptop - the app fits on the screen, and tall dialogs scroll inside.

A new version of the app

When we release a new version while you are working, a bar shows at the top: "A new version of HeatAlgo is available - reload to switch to it" with a "Reload" button. Your changes are saved, so reloading loses nothing.

A HeatAlgo report follows EN 12831-1 and EN 1264, not ACCA Manual J, and is not accepted for permits or rebates.

Frequently asked questions

Where in the app are settings and billing?

Settings has its own item in the side menu ("Settings"). Billing opens from the account menu in the top-right corner, item "Plan and billing". The same menu has "Settings", help, feedback, language and sign-out.

How do I switch between projects quickly?

Press Ctrl+K (Cmd+K on a Mac) to open the "Projects" dialog with a search. Type part of the name and pick the project; Enter opens it, Esc closes the dialog. Projects are also in the side menu, each with the list of its modules.

What is the "?" icon in the top bar for?

It opens help for the screen you are on - for example keyboard shortcuts in radiant floor heating, or how to prepare floor plans in ventilation. It shows only on screens that have such help. General material (the help center, what's new, contact) is in the account menu.

How do I report a bug or suggest a feature?

From the account menu pick "Send feedback". "Report a problem" attaches a screenshot automatically, "Suggest a module" takes ideas for tools, and "Email us" is for questions and account matters - we reply by email, usually within 24 hours.

Where do I switch between feet and meters?

In Settings, under "Units": metric (m, °C, W) or imperial (ft, °F, Btu/h). The same choice is in the gear of the heat loss calculation, heat pump sizing and ventilation, and in the radiant floor heating toolbar menu. An account created from the US starts in imperial. Every calculation stays metric to EN standards.

Does the HeatAlgo app work on a phone?

Yes - projects, the project view, the heat loss calculation, heat pump sizing, the client form, Algo, settings and billing work on a phone. Drawing in radiant floor heating and the "Ducts" step in ventilation need a larger screen: a computer or a tablet.
